Event Background:
The Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative (AGEDI) was launched on 2 September 2002, at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as a Type II Initiative. Inaugurated in 2002 by H. H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, AGEDI was formed to facilitate quality environmental data that equips policy-makers with actionable, timely information to inform and guide critical decisions. AGEDI works in close coordination with long-term partners Environment Agency- Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to maximize information exchange for improved decision-making at the local, national, regional and global levels. The LNRCCP was launched in 2013 with the aim of establishing a climate change work programme that could build upon, expand and deepen the understanding of vulnerability to the impacts of climate change in the UAE and the surrounding region, as well as identify practical adaptive responses at the local, national and regional levels. This work is driven by AGEDI’s vision to enhance accessibility to environmental data and information to support effective decision-making. AGEDI has engaged stakeholders throughout the region around five thematic areas: Regional climate change, Environment, Water resources, Coastal zones, and Socioeconomic systems. All outputs of the programme are freely available to all stakeholders. A comprehensive set of data used, models developed, maps/videos produced, and technical reports prepared can be accessed through AGEDI’s the interactive website Inspector, available at http://www.ccr-group.org/cc-inspectors.
