Nereus Director of Policy, Yoshitaka Ota, gave the keynote lecture at the 20 year anniversary symposium for Satoumi (Japanese coastal restoration), in Okayama Prefecture in Japan. The symposium had over 500 in attendance, including local fishers who are interested in the state of future oceans, following a national TV broadcast program featuring Nereus Program. Ota also led a one day workshop with 100 students the day before to enhance the region’s capacity for ocean education. A range of human pressures is threatening the sustainability of marine fisheries. Amongst those, overfishing, partly driven by Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, is a major stressor. Thirty percent of global fish catch goes unreported, found a recent study by Nereus Program collaborator Sea Around Us.
